  • This reserve is mind blowing. I have traveled to many places in Vietnam and this is by far the most beautiful. I was lucky to visit at the right time when the rice fields are bright green. Fireflies cover the fields at night which is magical to watch. Great for trekking and enjoying the peace and quiet. We walked to a village where everyone was very friendly. Just a super magical and extraordinary place!

  • We spent a day here it was raining we did a short trek from the retreat thru the rice terraced to the village. The views were beautiful and the sticky rice was still green and some yellow normal rice still created nice colors. After Sapa i can tell that this place is less turistic and more authentic. The Tay people do not try to follow you with souvenirs they judt live there

  • The Pu Luong area gives one the remoteness one needs to really soak up all the benefits of rural life, whilst not giving up any comfort. Tung’s Homestay in Ban Hieu is highly recommended. Basic but comfortable accommodation, good basic bathroom facilities with the luxury of hot water, and the most amazing hospitality and amazing food. Friendly and helpful people in the area. Inaccessible to cars, it is either a ride on the back of a scooter for the last 6 kms or a 1.5 hour comfortable hike through beautiful scenery. The waterfalls in the area are amazing to cool down in. Magical experience !

  • We spent 3 nights in Pu Luong and loved the valley and its trekkings. The people are simply the kindest in Vietnam and very sociaable. During one of our trekkings, which we took without a guide, we were invited to join a party with music and food. Nobody spoke English so we do not know what they were celebrating but we danced together and it was a great experienced for our 13-year-old son!

  • If you’re debating whether it’s worth the extra time and effort from Mai Châu, it definitely is! We rented motorbikes from Mai Châu and drove 2-3 hours into the reserve. There was a small muddy section but other than that the drive was easy with little traffic and some great views. Just take your time. We stayed at a home stay and I’d highly recommend that for at least one night to explore the area with walks through a village. We didn’t have time to trek but I’m sure that’d be awesome. We visited in January so every day was cloudy and one day was very foggy but it was still worth the trip. I’m sure the area is stunning during the other seasons especially for the rice terraces and I’d love to come back to see it!

  • This place is def hard to get reach, but once you are there….awww man the place is beautiful. Would be equivalent to sapa for thanh hoa province. Barely any tourists and the things to see and do are endless. Very relaxing and tranquil place. One of my fav getaway locations.

  • A good place to travel and enjoy vietnam sightseeing. It is not touristic as Sapa but it got the same thing: ethnic people and terrace rice field. What else do you expect more? Back to the basic without any wifi. All the homestay has hot water and a nice mattress to sleep though. Highly recommend!

  • Set on the side of a hill in tropical rainforest, looking over terraced rice fields and more hills and rainforest in the distance. A beautiful place to see and experience rural Vietnam. We stayed in the stilt house, shared with other guests. There are also separate bungalows for those who prefer their privacy. Taking walks through the hills, rice fields and villages is like walking back in time. It is so remote that we even lost power and water for a short period (not a big deal). The staff were very friendly and attentive. The only reason we haven’t given it 5-stars is the food. I’m not sure whether the kitchen wants to cook local Vietnamese style or a fusion with European styles. It doesn’t quite work. Apart from that, Pu Luong is excellent.

  • Puluong is less touristic that Sapa, that’s the main reason why we wanted to reach there. We enjoyed 3 days trekking in green nature with lush ricefields, beautiful terraces, lovely house on stilt and friendly people. The food was also excellent. Thanks Ethnic Voyage for organising such a trip to get away from busy capitil. We would recommend it to our friends

  • We had visited Pu Luong and did 2 treks (about 2h) over two days with our Ninh Binh guide. Although the rice in the padi fields were harvested, the padi fields and the mountains were still stunning. It was peaceful and green. There were buffaloes and ducks in the fields, dragonflies and butterflies, and shallow gurgling rivers. The water wheels and bamboo aqueducts were interesting. We visited some Thai villages and people seemed friendly and welcoming. We sampled freshly picked star fruits. Children shouted hellos across the padi fields and waved. There were no high pressure tactic sellers following you. We enjoyed Pu Luong very much.

  • Honestly, this was the best part of our travels in the north. 3 of us booked a 3 day/2 night tour with Toan and his friends. Escaping from Ninh Binh’s tourism and heading to Pu Luong was a breath of fresh air. The entire time we were there we saw about 5 other tourists. Walking through the rice terraces was spectacular, and the villages were full of locals happy to see you and children saying “hello!”
Over night we stayed in some beautiful accommodations – traditional wooden stilt house overlooking the rice terraces, and including mosquito nets, wifi and a fan to keep us cool.
It didn’t seem like a tour with activities packed in and a tight schedule, it was very calm and we had a lot of time to just chill out and enjoy our surroundings.

  • My wife and I just completed a 5 day/4night tour to the northern area of Vietnam and full day motor scooter tour around Ninh Binh. This was absolutely the best tour we took during our three months in Vietnam. Toan was our tour guide for the 5day/4 night trip that took us through communities and villages in Northern Vietnam seeing similar sites you’d see in the more famous SAPA tour. But, without the crowds. Here you’ll see the terraced rice and other crop fields but in a more rugged area farmed by the Hmong people high up in the scenic limestone mountains. Toan arranged two nights in homes stays and two nights in hotels located in small communities. Toan walked us through villages where we could see and experience how the locals live, their farms and make a living. We ate Vietnamese food, some which took us out of our comfort zone, that was always well prepared and tasty. If you find yourself in North Vietnam and want a unique experience you need to take this tour. Toan speaks perfect English, is professional and extremely attentive.

  • Best tour we had in Vietnam! We did a Ninh Binh day tour and 2 days in Pu luong.. Both were truly exceptional! Stunning scenery , and best of all, we got to experience the real, rural Vietnam. Toan speaks great english and is a really knowledgeable & fun person 🙂 We felt very comfortable and knew we were in good hands throughout the trip. if you want an off the beaten path experience, look no further! Thank you Toan for giving us so many beautiful memories !
